Huckleberry Railroad/Crossroads Village

Guest Blogger: Angela Miller

Huckleberry Railroad/Crossroads Village is an absolutely delightful family day out. Here you have the opportunity to take your kids on a scenic train ride, and tour the history of Genesee through century old homes, church, a bank, a barber shop, a Mill, schoolhouse, and more. You can top the day off with a ride on the huge paddle boat, and the vintage carousel and ferris wheel. As if that isn't enough to entice you, they also have animals! My children loved petting the cows, goats, llama, and belly laughed watching the chickens run right by us! My oldest son LOVED visiting the old Town Hall that now has a huge, detailed model train set and city inside.

The grounds are clean, the bathrooms were easy to find and clean enough for me (I'm pretty picky about bathrooms). They also have a restaurant (which we did not visit, but we saw that burgers and fries were offered), and in the old town there is ice cream, hot dogs, nachos, and drinks.

The train ride was the main attraction for us and it did not disappoint! The train is a literal antique from 1943 and it has such a nostalgic feeling. The ride was almost 40 minutes long! The kids just loved it. It is very scenic and goes through the woods, over water, and even stops traffic over the road--it was fun waving to all the stopped cars. The steam engine lets out several "CHOO CHOOOOOO's", and the kids loved that. We did not get a chance to ride the paddleboat, but hope to next time! This will be probably 1-2 time a year visit for us. It would be more if it were closer, but it's about an hour from Sterling Heights, in Flint. They also convert the train into Thomas the Train for the "Day out With Thomas", and will be doing that the last 2 weekends of August.

  1. I grew up going to Crossroads Village & have enjoyed taking my daughter to it as well. We went to the Day Out with Thomas that they had as well & we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, just as I remembered it as a kid.
