While I used to read comics throughout high school and college, I wouldn't say that my knowledge of the Marvel Universe was very in-depth. In fact, I only had a passing knowledge of the characters of Guardians Of The Galaxy, so I really didn't know what to expect going into the sneak preview that I attended.
Despite some rather brusque introductions of a few characters, the film was thoroughly enjoyable and a whole lot of fun. The special effects were amazing, but the film did a really good job of grounding its emphasis on the characters. It felt like each person introduced was given something to do other than just be on the screen taking up space. Even inanimate objects such as a walkman and an arrow shaped weapon were given little story arcs.
Overall, the movie was incredibly well-paced and kept your attention throughout, especially with the use of humor and a lot of well-placed throwaway lines. My wife and I will most likely go see it again to try and catch some of the ones we obviously missed.
This is definitely a film that a family with teenagers would enjoy, but it's not for young children as there is some crude language and intense action sequences that might scare little kids.
