Celebrate New Year's Eve at home with your family with these 10 fun ideas. Ring in 2021 with great food, fun games and create memories.

Whether your family usually spends New Year’s Eve together at home, at a family-friendly gathering, or the adults opt for a night out on the town, this year is certainly going to be different. We have some ideas on how you and your family can celebrate the New Year together.

Count Down the New Year Early

Celebrate New Year’s Eve at a specific time earlier in the Day. As an added educational component you can also talk about how there are many different time zones across the world. Celebrate the first New Year in the world with the citizens of Christmas Island at 5 am. Maybe that is a bit early for you? If so, then check out our guide to celebrating New Year’s Eve in each time zone.

Do something big and special to celebrate New Year’s Eve.

Make the Most of the Moment. Whether your children stay up until midnight to celebrate or if you celebrate early, make the moment special. You can pop balloons, blow noisemakers, spray silly string (outside), or even blow bubbles in the cold.

Food and Drinks: Special foods and beverages always make an occasion special. Some fun ideas you might want to try out are a sundae bar, fondue, hot chocolate bar or bombs, make your own cookies, milkshakes, frozen drinks (non-alcoholic), as well as finger foods buffet.

Decorate for 2022. It’s especially exciting this New Year’s Eve to say goodbye to the old year. Get yourself and your family in the mood to celebrate with lots of fun decorations. Don’t forget the party hats, noisemakers, confetti, balloons, glasses, and also necklaces.

Dress it Up or Down. Make the night special by dressing in a fun way. Maybe you all will get dressed up in formal attire. By the same token, you can have a costume party. You could also relax and hang out in your pajamas.

Plan Some Fun Activities

Dance the Night Away. Play some upbeat music, and dance the night away with some fun tunes. Kids Bop has some great family-friendly upbeat songs and is accessible on Youtube as well as Amazon. Amazon music is free for Prime Members. Try Amazon Prime for just $3 for 30 days.

Watch a Movie. Celebrate New Year’s Eve with your family with a movie night. Grab a blanket, some popcorn, and just chill. I highly recommend watching Croods: New Age or Soul. Both are great for the 7+ crowd.

Family Game Night. Select some fun games for everyone to play. One of our favorites is “Not Parent Approved“. (It’s similar to Cards Against Humanity, but for kids.) This games works well for all of us, because even our youngest non-reader can play by just choosing a random card, and to be honest, she usually wins. Other great family games are Uno, Mexican Train, and Sequence.

Minute to Win It. These fun short games will have everyone laughing and provide memories for a lifetime. You can find over 200 ideas, styles and even scoring rules on playpartyplan.com.

Celebrate with Sparklers. What a fun way to end the year with a few sparklers outside, if the weather permits. Just make sure to go over safety precautions and also have a bucket of water nearby for the used sticks.
