Buddy's Pizza hosts fundraiser for Capuchin Soup Kitchen, MONDAY April 4

Four decades since Buddy’s Pizza first partnered with the Capuchin Soup Kitchen, the family-owned restaurant’s legacy of giving back continues. On Monday, April 4, Buddy’s fans are invited to partake in the 40th annual Slice for Life event and enjoy an all-you-can-eat pizza dinner with proceeds benefiting the nonprofit’s community outreach services.

“Feeding hungry people is the foundation of our business,” said Wes Pikula, Buddy’s Pizza vice president of operations. “Partnering with the Capuchin Soup Kitchen has allowed us to extend our reach to hungry metro Detroiters who’ve fallen on hard times. No one should ever have to worry about where their next meal is coming from, and Slice for Life is one way we’ve been able to help fight hunger in our local community.”

Since the first Slice for Life event in 1976, Buddy’s Pizza has raised nearly $3 million to support the Capuchin Soup Kitchen’s programs, including: preparing and serving 2,000 meals a day; distributing household items; and operating a shower program, food pantry and children’s tutoring and art therapy program.  This year Buddy’s aims to raise $100,000 during the Slice for Life event.

“Our partnership with the Capuchin Soup Kitchen is our longest standing charitable relationship, and it’s because our staff believes in the soup kitchen’s work,” Pikula added. “In fact, the idea to work with the Capuchins came from a group of our employees in 1976, when Owner Robert Jacobs asked the staff what charity they’d like the company to work with and the Capuchin Soup Kitchen was the number one pick.”

In addition to the annual fundraiser, Buddy’s Pizza has supported the Capuchin Soup Kitchen every week for the past 40 years by donating leftover pizzas to serve to the hungry. The number of pizzas donated varies, but at times reaches more than 20 pies per week.
