Bug Quest: A Michigan Science Center Special Exhibit

Metro Detroit Mommy was lucky enough to get a complimentary sneak peek behind the scenes of the new temporary Bug Quest exhibit at the Michigan Science Center!  Bug Quest opens to the public officially on Saturday, May 13, 2016 and will run through the majority of the summer, until August 15, 2016.

Bug Quest will be a fun addition to the MI Science Center for both kids and adults, and has options for bug lovers as well as those who are more faint of heart!

"Choose you own adventure" style, guests will be asked by staff members at the entrance to the exhibit about their comfort level with insects and bugs, to help them decide which area to explore first.

Those who are on the squeamish side directed to the more tame side of the show to start.  These guests will be delighted by bug-inspired artwork and larger than life sculptures, ranging from butterflies to grasshoppers to beetles and more.  The models and artwork truly capture the beauty and delicate architecture of these creatures, which is often forgotten or simply unknown.  The hope is that once museum goers get to see a softer side of these many-legged critters, that they will be more receptive to seeing the real thing on the other side of the exhibit!

For those who are a bit more daring, they will be directed to the portion of the display which has a variety of live insects and bugs on display for your viewing pleasure.  If you're not an insect lover, rest easy knowing that they are all safely behind glass. The live insects are displayed in a carnival themed atmosphere to keep the feel of the exhibit fun instead of scary.

In addition to the exhibit, there is also a corresponding IMAX film showing in the Science Center's 5 story high IMAX Dome theater to round out your buggy adventure, Bugs! A Rainforest Adventure.

For those with children who are especially excited to learn more about bugs, the Science Center is also hosting a summer camp session for PreK-5th graders the week of July 5th.  More information including pricing and a link to register is available here:

You could spend a full day exploring the MI Science Center, once you've visited Bug Quest and seen the IMAX movie, there are 3 floors full of hands on exploration for everyone in the family from toddlers to teens, and even the adults.  They also offer adults only evening programs every 3rd Thursday, called After Dark and for the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) loving girl in your life, there is the STEMinista program!  More information on those programs is available on the MI Science Center website:
