Self Care Ideas for Moms – What is Self Care?

What is Self-Care and why is it important?

Self-Care simply means looking after yourself mentally, physically, spiritually, as well as psychologically. This should not be considered selfish but necessary to provide for others and maintain resiliency. As Audre Lorde, the feminist writer, once noted, “Caring for yourself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation.” ~The New York Times, Nov. 2020. Try not to be overwhelmed by developing a plan, just take a deep breath and start small.

There never seems to be enough hours in the day for a busy mom. In fact, 56 percent of women find it difficult to balance work and home life. Though it’s easy to let time for yourself come second to family, work and household obligations, putting it off can do more harm than good. The likelihood of illness, chronic stress, exhaustion and burnout increases for those who regularly disregard their physical, mental and emotional well-being. Mothers and women, in general, should consider practicing some of these acts of stress-reduction techniques in everyday life.

Great Start Readiness Program is a Michigan state-funded preschool program for four-year-old children with factors which may place them at risk of educational failure. The program is administered by the Michigan Department of Education, Office of Great Start. Funding is allocated to Wayne RESA to administer the program locally. These blogs were developed and funded under a grant awarded by the Michigan Department of Education. Research on preschool programs and specific research on GSRP indicates that children provided with a high-quality preschool experience show significant positive developmental differences when compared to children from the same backgrounds who did not attend a high-quality preschool program.
