Great Wolf Lodge – Traverse City: The Waterpark

Last week we had an incredible vacation at Great Wolf Lodge in Traverse City.  There is so much to do, but the main attraction is the indoor water park.

There is something for everyone in the expansive waterpark facility which is kept at 84 degrees year-round.  Younger guests can enjoy the Whooping Hollow and Cub Paw Pool where there are water jets, spray features, slides and zero-depth entry.  Naomi (age 19 months) and Carlyn (age 4.5) both had a great time in this section.

Fort Mackenzie was Carlyn’s favorite place to hang out.  She enjoyed the two slides that were available, riding them over and over.  Hubby enjoyed the big bucket which dumps 1000 gallons of water every five minutes.

Our family favorite was the River Canyon Run which is a big slide that you ride down in a big tube.  Guests must ride with a partner. Two other slides were available in Alberta Falls, but they were a little fast for the girls and they only tried the slower one once.

The Manitoba Tubs are heated pools with jets of water.  This was another family favorite.  Especially for Naomi who had fun blowing bubbles in water and spent a lot of time meeting new friends.  It was nice to relax in the warm water with the girls.

Another family favorite was the Crooked Creek, a lazy river which could be enjoyed with or without an inner tube.  All the girls enjoyed going without a tube most of the time, swimming in circles over and over again while Chancellor relaxed on a tube and floated along.

Big Foot Pass and Chinook Cove were fun for Rosa and Chancellor.  Rosa tested her skills crossing the lily pads and playing basketball with her dad.  Naomi enjoyed throwing the balls in the water and chasing after them.

In addition to the water park features, the park also hosts restrooms, changing rooms (complete with hair dryers and suit spinners), lockers for rent, cabana rentals, tables and chairs, warm towels and life jackets.

One thing I really liked about Great Wolf Lodge was they allowed you to choose if your child would wear a life jacket or not.  The lifeguards also rarely use their whistles and are very vigilant.  We observed drills of practice drowning scenarios a couple of times during our stay, which kept the lifeguards on their toes.
