Urban Gardens in Detroit

It's time to sow your seeds!  The last frost is almost here and it's planting season.  Gardening looks different for all of us.  Some of us have a garden in our backyard and others use pots on patios to grow herbs, tomatoes, and strawberries.

Urban community gardens are popping up everywhere within Detroit.  One of Detroit's big initiatives is to use the vacant land within the city limits as community gardens and promote healthy sustainable living.  Neighbors can come together and volunteer to care for the garden.  You meet new people and learn about gardening.  Urban gardening is growing rapidly in Detroit and is bringing a positive sense of community among its residents and volunteers.

Community gardening promotes a sense of community and it also provides those with no property a chance to plant. In the suburbs, places like Rochester Hills are providing residents an opportunity to have a garden plot at a local community garden. Deer are a threat to crops and the suburbs are home to many deer.  Having  a plot at the community garden provides a safe place for your plants.

Are you interested in volunteering at an Urban Garden?  Here is a list of gardens within the city limits of Detroit.  This is a great opportunity to learn about community gardens and help grow Detroit!
