Book Review: The Crowns of Croswald

Courtesy of publisher Stories Untold, I was provided with an advance copy in exchange for a review of The Crowns of Croswald, the first novel by author D.E. Night.  The book is being promoted as a cross between the Harry Potter and Percy Jackson series', and the similarities are definitely there as soon as you get into the story.  For lovers of fantasy and magical tales, this book may be right up your alley!

Night's tale follows sixteen-year-old Ivy Lovely, a scullery maid with dreams of a different life, whose magical powers are awakened when she leaves the boundaries of the castle that she has lived in.  Ivy suddenly finds herself a student of the Halls of Ivy, a school where students learn to master their magical skills.  Accompanied by her pet dragon and new friends, Ivy uncovers magical secrets and tries to save herself and the town of Croswald from the Dark Queen.

As an adult reader, I found the writing to be a bit choppy and distracting - though my 8-year-old daughter didn't seem to be deterred when she was reading and is looking forward to the follow-up, as Crowns is the first in Night's series.  It was refreshing to see a female lead character, which I think my daughter also enjoyed and appreciated.  Overall it was a fun story and there is potential for a great series.  An ideal audience would be middle schoolers, though younger advanced readers will likely also enjoy this book.

The Crowns of Croswald is now available from Amazon!
