Hilton HHonors Skate America Recap

Blogger: Carissa Knoles

Ice, Ice, Baby, what a great show!  The Hilton HHonors on Friday October 18th, 2013 was a magical start to the Skate America competition held at Joe Louis arena downtown Detroit.  Puffs Kleenex was a proud sponsor, providing a variety of free photo opportunities and even a make over in the public areas of Joe Louis.  Free make up and free photos plus a show?  What a fabulously family friendly event!

I took my 12 year old niece who skates competitively.  She knew quite a few of the skaters and coaches by name, which was exciting for us both! The Friday evening event showcased the Men’s Short Program, where Team USA competitors Jason Brown and Adam Ripppon placed 2nd and 3rd respectively.  The Joe was ablaze with Red, White and Blue as fans waved flags and cheered loudly for their heroes on ice.

The couples short dance performances ended the evening with a fun, engaging experiences for all.  The fox trot seemed to be the dance of the night as couples skated together with fancy dancing feet.  It was amazing to observe as a spectator of the sport, but my niece who skates was more than impressed and inspired.  The Joe bathrooms were clean, the event wasn't overly crowded and the only complaint I have was the confusion parking lot choices created.  Some lots right outside the Joe were $5 while others were $15, with the exact same walking distance.  Leaving your car unattended was a little nerve racking, as these prices are quite different, but the lots looked the same.  Luckily, we enjoyed the talented skaters, the promotions provided by Puff Kleenex as a sponsor and my car was safely waiting for us once the festivities concluded.  A great family event in Metro Detroit!
