Scout Park in Hazel Park Renovated

We have lived in Hazel Park for a little over seven years.  I love our quaint little neighborhood.  I know my neighbors, we have a growing Downtown with some top-notch restaurants, it is certainly an up-and-coming city.  To be frank, until the recent Scout Park makeover, there wasn’t really a noteworthy playground in Hazel Park to write about.

We are thrilled with the Scout Park renovation.  This space is a small 5-acre community park in Hazel Park.  Located south of 9 Mile between John R and Dequindre, it is close to both I-75 and I-696.  While the park has no official address, you can find it on Google Maps at 1001 East Otis Ave.  There is a paved lot on the south side of the park as well as street parking on Otis.  However, this is no parking on Russell Ave.

A new playscape at Scout Park

The newly renovated park features several climbing structures, a zip line, merry go round, enclosed toddler area, baseball diamond, pavilion with picnic tables in addition to a paved walking path. There are indoor restrooms on-site, however, I have never seen them open.

The enclosed toddler area features a rather large structure with many different climbing elements, rock wall, slides, a tunnel, and a fun bridge.  The area also includes a teeter-totter, bouncy toys, two toddler bucket swings along with an ADA swing.  There are a couple of benches along the fence which provide a nice resting spot for parents and children alike.

The main structure contains several levels of play.  There is a rock wall, spiral slide, several climbing elements, monkey bars, in addition to ramp access. Two small houses provide children the opportunity for dramatic play.   Several panels of sensory play are available near the structure as well.  One of the coolest features of Scout Park is an inset merry-go-round, which was a favorite for many children. Although, I’m sure that everyone would agree that it would be more fun if it went faster. But most of all, my girls enjoyed playing on the zip line.

Next, several swings are available.  In addition to the toddler buckets swings, Scout Park has traditional swings, two ADA swings, and several tire swings.

Finally, there is an additional smaller play structure off the to side.  This structure features several climbing and swinging elements that will test a child’s gross motor skills, vestibular sense, and balance.

It is worthwhile to mention that during our visit there were several teens present at the park.  A couple were throwing rocks, some used adult language, and littering at the park is an issue.  I sincerely hope that our community finds some solutions to these issues.
