Lisa Ball #MomsWhoShine

#MomsWhoShine is a series about moms who have some kind of talent.  The series was inspired by Dad of Divas Dads in the Limelight.

I know Lisa as the co-owner of Nature's Playhouse in Ferndale.  I simply love her fun, laid back spirit and her positive energy.

Tell me about yourself…
I wear a lot of hats as most Moms do.  I’m a published author, business owner, community organizer,  and coffee addict!  I have two books sold worldwide on, head up my own consulting firm called, and co-own with another busy and talented Mom named Michelle McEvoy.
I am a graduate of The Detroit Business School, The David Presley School of Cosmetology, and additionally hold a certification in Video Production from CMN Television Studios.  Although my principal passion today is in the work I do at Natures Playhouse and My Glass is Full, my other endeavors have allowed me to have been a guest on CMN TV's Sketches of Michigan, presented at the Kerrytown Book Festival and The Baldwin Public Library notably, as well as several area elementary schools.

Tell me about your family…
My husband and I are parents to a beautiful 3 year old boy named Owen.  Matthew Ball is an internationally recognized piano blues and boogie-woogie performer, and has been a private piano instructor for more over 20 years in the community.  Today he also teaches around the world with online SKYPE lessons.  We are both life-long Michiganders, and met 14 years ago through mutual friends. We live in Clawson today where we have organized the Annual Clawson Arts & Authors Festival for the last 3 years.

What is a normal day in your home like?
Busy, busy, busy.  We co-sleep with our son Owen, so the best part is waking up to his little smiling face, followed by an immediate stop at the kitchen for a cup of Joe and quick breakfast before tackling the ever-changing demands of the day.

What is the most rewarding thing about being a mom?
The best part of being a Mom is that I get the chance to see life experienced through the eyes of an infant and toddler, who are able to remind us “grown-ups” about all the wonderment and joy life can hold if we could see it through their eyes.

What is your biggest challenge of being a parent?
In two words – finding balance.   Juggling work and home-life still remains the biggest challenge in my life.  I use to work in the 9 – 5 corporate world which kept both worlds separate, but meant that I was away from home for long hours.   Now working for myself, I live in a world where both are meshed together, which though seemingly easier, presents a whole host of new issues to compete with.

How do you find balance between being a mom, working and having time for yourself?
Asking for help is key to finding balance between the three. Since my husband works for his self he can usually give me a break when I need it and Owen loves spending time with his grandparents!

What are some of the lessons you’ve learned since becoming a Mom?
I learned that family members like and want to help with the new baby, just ask.

What is the best advice about being a parent you have received and who gave it to you?Take time for yourself, courtesy of Mrs. Michelle McEvoy. As mothers it is all too easy to forget about ourselves and that we need to be healthy both physically and mentally so we can take care of our children.

What advice would you give to other moms?
Don’t forget about your husband! Your mate helped to make this baby and still needs your love and attention!
