Packing Healthy Snacks for Vacation

Metro Detroit Mommy Guest Blogger:  Katie Serbinski - Mom to Mom Nutrition

If you’re like me, you’ve been dreaming about summer vacation [or warmer weather] since February. In May, the vacation mindset becomes a reality when the days become longer and it actually DOES warm up in Michigan. Whether you are loading up a camper, a car, or flying Delta, you and I both know there’s more to vacation than packing clothes and toiletries. The kids are ALWAYS hungry!

Here are a few of my favorite snacks that are both family-friendly AND fit the healthy bill for this registered dietitian mom. And don’t forget if you are flying, it would be easier to pack the items that do not need a cooler or any kind of refrigeration. Also consider purchasing drinks once you get through security.

Milk in single serving boxes
100% fruit or vegetable juice

Granola bars
Whole grain cereal
Rice Cakes
Whole grain Goldfish
Unsalted pretzels
Animal crackers

Fruit and Veggies:
Fresh: oranges, grapes, bananas, carrot sticks, cucumber slices
Dried: raisins, apricots, banana chips

Almonds, walnuts
Peanut butter sandwich
Beef jerky
String cheese, yogurt

Want to know what I consider just as important as the food for travel? The cleanup supplies! Don’t forget a trash bag and wipes. And the family pet--- chance are your dog will have LOTS of crumbs to cleanup [speaking from experience here]. Healthy travels!
