Mt. Elliott Park in Detroit

What a beautiful day, what a beautiful park.  Mt. Elliott Park is a gem right on the Detroit Riverfront, a perfect place to cool down and let your children play at their brand new splash pad. Originally published on 6/5/15.

The park features a Great Lakes schooner-themed water feature with water cascades and “kid-activated” water cannons, wind chimes and many other interactive features. The park is beautifully landscaped, complete with fishing piers, winding walkways, LED lighting, restrooms and a café (although the cafe was not open today). It is located at 120 Mt. Elliott in Detroit at the foot of Mt. Elliott and Wight Streets, right off of Jefferson, minutes from I-75, 375 and the Lodge.

The kids had so much fun spraying and playing in the water.  They loved how the splash pad was very interactive.  They were able to point the cannons and spray water at each other.

It’s gorgeous, right on the riverfront.  However, a few bushes and rocks are all that separates the park from the Detroit River at one point, so if you have an adventurous child, you will want to keep a close eye on them.

This pavilion is seriously awesome.  Tables, chairs, shade, bathrooms and a family restroom too.  The family restroom has a changing table (this is not provided in either of the other restrooms).  During our visit, I was told the lock is broken and it only locks from the outside, so if you care to use the family restroom just ask one of the security personnel to assist you.

I was also informed that there are video cameras all over the park to record the day’s activities.  They actively discourage parents from changing their children in public.

The beautiful walkway is part of a multiple mile paved strips that follows along the Detroit River.  We didn’t explore it today, but we will be back another day to walk along the river.

Another fun, interactive part of the park is the musical instruments.  There were drums and chimes that the children enjoyed playing while we were there.

Finally, one of the neatest things we spotted were all the animal footprints in the cement.  At first, I thought it was by accident, but after this set of prints, I am rather sure they were placed there intentionally.  Great topic of discussion trying to identify each set.  Rosa thinks these are from a bear.

Overall Mt. Elliott Park in Detroit is a fantastic place to take the kids on a hot summer day.  I’m sure your family will enjoy a visit to this wonderful park.
