Kidz Shows at Campus Martius

I have to admit, there's a lot more going on in downtown Detroit than I thought there was - the vast majority of it is geared towards family play time too. My husband started working near Campus Martius Park a couple months ago and his employer is really pushing the whole "come play downtown" vibe; so much so that we're getting weekly emails about what's going on.

I can't complain about that either. So far we have spent a day playing with (and learning about) alternative energy during Shell's Eco-Marathon and playing in the snow at the Meridian Winterfest; now I'm seeing all the events that will be happening this summer and it's making me really excited!

One of those events is the Kidz Shows series - FREE children's theater and puppet shows. The are three shows that are a part of this series and I can't wait to check them out with the boys. Who doesn't love theater in the park?! Each show will start at 1 p.m. and conclude with a Make & Take Session featuring a themed craft at 2 p.m.

June 25th - Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella
Michigan theater company, Project DayDream, delivers unique and entertaining youth theater performances with a mission to educate, entertain and enrich the metropolitan Detroit community through the arts.

Make & Take Session: All princes and princesses will work with a local artist to create beautiful handmade crowns!

July 23rd - Dot and Ziggy by Linda Hartzell and Mark Perry
Presented by Matrix Theatre Company Stage Show. Dot and Ziggy may be neighbors, but they aren’t yet friends. After all, what could a ladybug and a skunk possibly have in common? One likes up, one likes down. One flies, one runs. But neither of them know how to share. With the help of a wise spider, and the encouragement of the audience, they might just find their way."

Make & Take Session: to be announced at a later date.

August 27th - Mammoth Follies
Presented by Hudson Vagabond Puppets Stage Show. Mammoth Follies explores the wonders of evolution in an old-fashioned revue of original songs, witty jokes, and earth-smashing dances performed by giant dinosaur puppets. This program dramatizes historic and scientific facts (as well as some myths) about the great age of the dinosaur. Enormous puppets populate the stage, including your host Willie Mammoth, Smiley the Saber-Toothed Tiger, Bessie the lovable 27-foot long Apatosaurus, Tony and Trixie Triceratops, Terry the Pterodactyl, and the 11-foot tall T. Rex in a musical trip through pre-history.

Make & Take Session: Model Magic Dino Sculptures
