Kids Night at Plato’s Coney Island in Warren

It’s been a crazy few weeks here at The McKeeman house. I’ve had kids sick with strep throat and terrible allergies, busy times at work, and I had to take my mom to the hospital on Mother’s Day.
Needless to say, after I picked her up from the hospital and got her settled in her apartment, I wasn’t about to battle the 696 closure at 5pm to get back home to Berkley.

As the Calendar Manager for Metro Detroit Mommy, I follow A LOT of pages to find events to share with all of you readers, so I decided to “live on the edge” when a Facebook notification popped up on my phone for an event tonight at Plato’s Coney Island in Warren.

My five-year-old was bored and hungry-not the best combination.  He was already tired of being in the car shuttling Grandma all around town. I didn’t tell him about any of the fun possibilities, because I fully expected to walk into a dive coney island with a waitress painting cat whiskers on kids with eyeliner. I was so impressed as soon as I walked into the door. The atmosphere was nice and clean. Two of the 4 TVs were set to kids programming and there were Disney songs playing overhead.
The waitresses were all wearing cartoon or superhero shirts and were super friendly.
The menu was unique and varied, but still had the standard, kid favorites.
My son ordered the kid’s french toast with a scrambled egg (instead of meat). He finished everything on his plate. I opted for the Veg Head Loaded Fries and was not disappointed.  The serving size was HUGE.  I brought more than half home.
While we waited for our food, I sent Bennett over to the balloon artist/face painter. She was stationed in one corner of the restaurant and I felt comfortable letting him go over there by himself. The place was about half full and not huge, so I could easily keep my eyes on him. He chose a Spiderman balloon but opted out of face painting.
We had a fun, impromptu, Mom/Son evening, and I would absolutely go back again.  There was even a little sundae bar that was included in our meal!
As we were leaving, we noticed a table full of games to play and coloring books and crayons. The place wasn’t overly childish, but they definitely know how to keep kids and families happy. We spent a total of $17 (including tip) for the two of us, and I think that is totally reasonable for the experience and the amount of food we received. I am looking forward to going back again, and trying some of their other menu items.

Plato’s Coney Island is located at 29100 Dequindre Road in Warren. You can check out their Facebook page here.
