Family Fun: Belle Isle ADA Playground

With spring on the horizon, it’s almost time to start exploring all of the best local parks & playgrounds!  While some are aware of the main play structure near the center of Belle Isle, in the fall of 2016 a beautiful new ADA playground was completed adjacent to the Nature Center.  The play structure has a gorgeous nature theme, and is nestled next to one of the many small inland lakes that dot the island.

For kids of all ages and abilities, there is plenty to do!  Ziplines, slides, a merry-go-round, and lots of climbing structures are the main highlights.  For the youngest of children, you’ll want to explore with them as some of the climbing areas are quite high and/or challenging.  My kids were 6 and 3.5 the first time we played here and both were able to play independently, though I stuck close to my youngest in case he got too brave!

There is ample parking directly next to the playground, and benches so that you can sit and enjoy the view.  There are bathrooms located nearby inside of the Nature Center, but the hours there are limited so you may have to walk, bike, or drive to the next nearest restroom when needed.  Note that you do need a Michigan State Parks pass to enter the island, or you can purchase one as you arrive for $11.
Overall this is a beautiful and fun play area with some unique features that can be a part of a day exploring the Isle, and it’s enough of an attraction to travel for in and of itself.
