Belle Isle ADA Playground on Oakway Run

The Belle Isle Playgrounds provide over 1/2 acre of play space and are a great place for the kids to burn off some extra energy. There are a couple of different playground locations in the park. The Kids Row Playground as well as the new Belle Isle ADA Playground.  The Detroit River surrounds Belle Isle Park, a 982-acre island park in Detroit. As a result, the island provides spectacular views of Detroit to the North and Canada to the south.

With spring on the horizon, it’s almost time to start exploring all of the best local parks & playgrounds!  Many have visited the main play structure near the center of Belle Isle. However, in the fall of 2016, the DNR build a beautiful new ADA playground adjacent to the Nature Center.  The play structure has a gorgeous nature theme. It is nestled next to one of the many small inland lakes that dot the island.

Belle Isle ADA Playground Features

For kids of all ages and abilities, there is plenty to do!  Ziplines, slides, a merry-go-round, as well as lots of climbing structures are the main highlights.  For the youngest of children, you’ll want to explore with them as some of the climbing areas are quite high and/or challenging.  At the present time, my kids are 6 and 3.5. Both were able to play independently, however, I stuck close to my youngest in case he got too brave!

There is ample parking directly next to the playground, and benches so that you can sit and enjoy the view.  The bathrooms are close to the play structure, located inside of the Nature Center. Even so, the hours there are limited so you may have to walk, bike, or drive to the next nearest restroom if the Nature Center is closed.  Overall this is a beautiful and fun play area with some unique features that can be a part of a day exploring the Isle, and it’s enough of an attraction to travel for in and of itself.
